Uberman Sleep, End of Week One.

Well its been 7 days since i first started my attempt at adapting to Polyphasic Sleep. So far id say i have about 50% success. I’ve messed up a few times with oversleeping and one major time with my nice and short 12 hour nap…. but I’ve also noticed that my naps are helping me with my sleep deprivation. And im enjoying the benefits of the extra time at night. Even though i assume i have a long way till full adaptation i will still press on with this. A few annoying oversleeps are not going to come even close to stopping me. I will continue to update this blog every day i can. For today my naps have been pretty good. I’m actually falling asleep for all of them now too. Even if its not for the full 20 minutes.

A small pointless thing I’ve noticed is my cat is loving this sleep cycle. Normally i was always to busy to play with her much or pay any attention at all and she is one of those cats that loves her owner to death. So she seems to be really happy and playful all the time now. And i love cats like that so its cool.
My only downside i have noticed aside from the tiredness is that i am hungry ALL the time. Now i know i am a small person and i always did normally eat a lot because of my fast rate of digestion. But before i was able to actually eat and then not be hungry for at least a few hours. But now i eat and i am always still hungry. I would just eat more but i cant exactly afford tons of food all the time. Right now i am eating one of those oven pizzas all to myself and i will still be hungry after I’m done.
Another thing although i think this is just from sleep deprivation because i experienced it while pulling all nighters in the past. But anyway my ankles and wrists seem to be slightly sore all the time. Its not to much to really bother me a lot but it is noticeable.
Also i am rather proud of myself for giving up caffeine practically cold turkey. I used to drink multiple cups of coffee each day and now i might have a cup of tea every 2 days. And im not getting any of the withdraw headaches i used to get when not drinking anything with caffeine.
Hmm i just finished my pizza and i’m starving.

Well ill update sometime later everything seems to be going good and i don’t seem to be set back too much from my 12 hour oversleep.

A Minor/Huge Setback

Ok so after my last update my 8pm nap went great. I woke up feeling good and all that stuff. Then my 12am nap came around. Oh my did i fuck up. To sum it up i fell asleep at 12am and woke up at 12:20……12:20pm. So i have been in a bad mood all day because i don’t even know how many days this is going to set me back on my adaptation. From now on I’m just going to start completely over and act like I’m just starting this for the first day. However this setback does give me even more motivation to adapt to this and no give up. After sleeping for 12 hours which i used to do often, i woke up with back pain and feeling very sore and feeling very exhausted.
So now that I’m set back by at least 5 days i get to go through all that again! joy joy.
my 4pm nap is up i know i wont sleep but it helps to just lay down

Uberman Sleep Day 5

God I’m tired.
I’m actually starting to feel the zombie effects now. I guess it took me long enough since im already on day 5.
I’ve got about half an hour till my 8pm nap and I’m having some trouble keeping my eyes open.
I’m also starting to slur my speech randomly and my joints are hurting like a 90 year old woman wiht Osteoporosis.
I have such a lost sense of the time of day, its 7:20pm right now and i can swear it feels like its 3pm.
anyway I’m off to do something before my nap. I guess ill update with something better later tonight.
oh oddly enough i feel like a zombie but i don’t exactly feel like i am dead tired i just feel exhausted and zombie like.
i find that odd
ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
bye

Uberman Sleep day 3…..and Day 4.

Sorry i skipped a day in updates i wasn’t near a computer. hmmmm let me start from day 3.

Day 3 was going great my 12am nap went well and i was feeling like i was beginning to actually get something out of my naps. Then came my 4am nap. Now i was at my girlfriends house and didn’t want to disturb her with my alarm so i slept upstairs on the couch. I also borrowed her cell phone because she told me it had an alarm on it and i figured it couldn’t hurt. So i set my little fancy alarm clock and her cell phone alarm, which by the way was very confusing to set up. After setting both alarms i lay down and fall asleep planning on sleeping for 20-30 minutes. Then i open my eyes and its 8am! I also woke up really groggy so it took me a while to realize what mistake i had just made because my body was telling me i messed up somewhere. After realizing i had overslept i take a look at the alarm clock and cell phone. They were both turned off! Somehow in my half awake stupor at 4:30 am i managed to get up and switch off my alarm clock and then proceed to press the 5 billion buttons you need to press to make the cell phone alarm go off. Then i had grabbed a blanket and gone back to sleep on the couch. However i do not recall any of this happening at all. So i was quite pissed off at myself for that mistake. I was just glad i didn’t sleep longer. For the rest of that day i didn’t fall asleep for any of my naps. That was pretty much the end of day 3 i didn’t feel any better or worse than i did on day 2.

Day 4 went much better.
I didn’t sleep for my 12am nap.
I only slept 5 minutes for my 4am nap. My 8am nap went according to plan and i felt great when i woke up.
Then my 12pm, 4pm, and 8pm naps were sleepless with me just sitting there trying to sleep. But the rest from laying down did give me a minor boost in energy. Oddly enough that sums up day 4 pretty good. I really didn’t do anything all day.

Here i am now at the Start of Day 5. Its 2am and I’m finally starting to do a few new things with my time. I finally went out and bought a new controller for my PS2 since my old controller has been broken for the past 10 months. Thats helping pass the time. I’m also starting to look around for making more Trance Music mixes. I used to do that a few years back and stopped because of a lack of time to do it. Ive also wanted to note that since the start of this new sleep cycle my social life has not been affected at all. I still hang out with my friends all day, i just run off to a couch every 4 hours but they do not mind at all. This is surprising because i always heard it was quite a challenge to keep up a social life. Anyway I’m off to do whatever i can with this free time.

Uberman Sleep Day 2

Well its day two and im all alone in this experiment now both of my friends have dropped out of it. Thats a little blow to my confidence in adapting to this but i think ill be ok. Ive finally figured out a simple nap schedule because before for some reason my mind just couldn’t figure it out. So i made a little spreadsheet in excel to give me a visual of what its like and i just take naps on a 12,4,8,12,4,8 cycle its a pretty normal schedule. Im still having trouble falling asleep during my naps i slept for about 10 minutes on my 4am nap and on my 8am nap i overslept by 10 minutes. But everything seems ok. I find that right now i am repeating myself a lot. I’m currently at my girlfriends and she says i keep on repeating myself after every hour. Other than that and the tiredness i feel pretty good. I’m sure the fact that im not sleeping during my naps will affect the time it takes me to adapt to this. But even if it does take a while I’m sure ill be ok through this. Ive got my 4pm nap coming up so this is where i press that fancy button that says “Publish” so you can all read this.

Uberman Sleep Day 1

Well day one is over and its been sorta hectic and disappointing. Pascual one of my friends joining me in trying this has dropped out because of plans he has coming up.(trip to Mexico) As for myself, i fell asleep during my first nap and did not fall asleep for any of my other naps. i was talking with my other friend who is doing this, Jeff. We were talking about our napping schedule and discovered the one we had set up did not loop properly during the days (6Nx30min every 4 hours) so we adjusted it to 30min naps every 3.5 hours until we get used to falling asleep faster and can narrow down the time given up for naps.

Anyway last night we got some nasty storms rolling through just in time for my 3:30am nap i went to take my nap as i was actually tired for this one and expected to fall asleep. Well i fell asleep, but for 5 hours…. But my excuse for this is a good one! The storm had knocked my power out for a little while i guess because my alarm clock was reset to 12AM I’m rather glad this happened on my first night and not while i was right in the middle of adapting. Today I’m going to buy another alarm clock and batteries for both of them. Even though this oversleep has set me back a little bit I’m sure. It hasn’t torn me away from still wanting to try this im pretty sure im not giving up unless I’m just passing out right where i am standing :-p Well i was supposed to take a nap at 8AM but i overslept so my next nap is at 11:30AM I’m sure even though this first day has had difficult moments. it will only get harder from here. i say bring it on!

one of the experimenters

hello, my name is jeff, and i am one of brendan’s friends who is going to try the ubermans sleep schedule. im unsure of how long i will keep it up (i figure in time i will need to switch to the everyman schedule, assuming this even works out).

as for myself, i am 19 years old, and i have stopped drinking caffeinated beverages since march of this year (a few slip ups, but for the most part im clean)

besides the spare time i will be gaining with this new schedule, im mostly curious about what i have heard about the dreams that accompany this sleeping method

as this begins and continues, i will post news and updates of my progress
